September 11th 2001: The event that shaped international relations, global and national politics, development policy, counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency strategy, and no doubt university and college syllabuses for the last two decades across the globe. I was 14 and I remember getting home from school and hearing in very vague terms about the terrorist attack in New York (the news of the Pentagon and the field in Pennsylvania came later). I remember overhearing someone talking about their wife who was travelling internally in the United States who he couldn’t get in contact with. And I remember getting home, turning on the tv and watching the replay of the planes hitting the towers, the billowing black smoke and the tiny faceless figures in the windows of the towers, and finally the dramatic and stomach-dropping footage on the towers falling one and then the other, and the silence that followed it. What I distinctly remember in the hours and days after were the calls to give blood and emergency service personnel, not only from New York and the US but all around the world, travelling and volunteering to search for survivors. Except there were no survivors and the blood donations were not needed. Thousands of people died that day (and dozens of animals) and many hundreds of thousands from the wars in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Yemen and across the Middle East and North Africa. Then there are the first responders and those who the black dust from the towers covered who are slowly dying in their hundreds from the air that the US government assured them was safe. The terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001 were horrific but what the world and more importantly governments have not learnt from this event is the biggest tragedy. I remember every year what was lost and what we continue to lose to intolerance, hatred and the sheer contempt to learn from mistakes.
